Introduction

There are three different types of Treasure Hunt in The Towers of Eden, one involves a physical journey and search, whilst the others require only a careful study of the Book.

The Quest for the Ladies’ Brooches

Physical Treasure Hunt

Tokens representing the Twelve Golden Lady’s Brooches (one per Chapter of the Book) are hidden around the area covered by the Tales of Eden. You must find the token and then go to the right place at the right time to exchange your token for its golden counterpart in its exquisite casket.

The Hoard of Eden

Armchair Treasure Hunt

The Hoard of Eden is a true hoard consisting of real jewellery from the past, as well as a golden Lady’s brooch, genuine silver hoards of coins from the medieval, Tudor and Stuart times and thousands of pounds of Charles III and Elizabeth II £1 and £2 legal tender. The hoard is all contained in an 18th century Presentation Case. Win it by answering the questions in the book and completing the entry form in the back of the book.

The Faces of the Past

Test of Observation

In each of the Illustrations in the Book are hidden faces from the past. See how many you can find and the one who finds the most faces in each of the Chapter illustrations will win a gilded decorative skull as a trophy and tribute to their observation. There will also be a grand trophy for the observant reader who can find the most faces from the past in the entire book (including covers).

The Quest for the Ladies’ Brooches

There are twelve chapter prizes in the Towers of Eden Treasure Hunt.

A Gold Sapphire and Ruby Spectral Lady’s Brooch will be awarded to the finders of each of twelve brooch tokens who can show that they located the tokens by solving the chapter puzzle and riddles and who can then find the correct time and place to exchange the token and relevant slip extracted from the book for the prize.

The Chapter Hunt is in two parts.

Each chapter in the book contains clues as to the approximate location of one token. Tokens are hidden, not buried, at twelve sites in Northwest of England and cannot be found by metal detectors. Please do not dig as tokens are not buried but hidden.

Once you have found the token you must search the book to find the time and place to exchange the token for the prize brooch.

Tokens are marked to identify them and may be found by careful search around the locations revealed by the chapter clues. Tokens are non-metallic and cannot be found by metal detectors. Please do not dig as tokens are not buried but hidden. Also please do not cause any damage in your search.

All of the tokens may be reached by public roads or paths or are at places to which the public have access. None of them are on English Heritage or National Trust property or in a dangerous location. Please obey the Countryside Code when engaged in your search. Do not endanger or damage yourselves or others or any place you visit during your search.

You will probably need a good map in order to find the tokens. Ordnance Survey maps are recommended.

The book also contains clues as to the place and time at which the token can be exchanged for the prize brooch in its casket. If you have found the token you must bring the entire token with you for verification to the place of exchange on the day and at the time specified in the Book.

The Huntmaster or his representative will attend at the place indicated by the relevant chapter clues on the day and at the hour indicated by the clues in the Book. If the correct Chapter Prize token is presented to him he will ask questions to verify it has been found using the clues in the Book and will ask for a completed chapter prize ticket for the relevant chapter cut from the Book. If he receives the correct answers to his questions he will deliver the Prize Brooch.

If the token is not offered to the hunt master within one hour of the time fixed in the book then the Huntmaster or his representative may leave the location of exchange without exchanging the token for the brooch and will return to the same place the next time the date and the hour match those set out in the clues in the book. The Huntmaster shall not be obliged to return to the location of exchange more than five times.

Although prizes may be discovered during the course of the hunt no answers to any of the puzzles nor details of prizes claimed will be given until after the main Hoard of Eden prize has been awarded and the Faces of the Past winners announced following the Closing Date or any extension of it.

Finders of tokens are prohibited from publicising or disclosing their discovery to third parties until the Closing Day. Finders of tokens who breach this rule may be prevented from collecting their Brooch prize, and the Huntmaster reserves the right not to appear at the location given for exchange if the discovery of any token or identity of any claimant is revealed in breach of this rule.

No one person or person in concert with them (as defined in the rules below) may claim more than one chapter prize.

The full rules of the Towers of Eden Treasure Hunt, which can be found in the book and on the website below, apply to the Chapter Prizes The Faces of the Past and the Hoard of Eden competitions.

In all cases and at all times where a decision has to be made or discretion exercised the Huntmaster’s judgement will be final and conclusive. For further information - including photographs of the prizes – see the photo gallery below.

Treasure Hunt Tips DO’S AND DON’TS

Generally

  1. The Treasure Hunts and Competitions in the Towers of Eden are designed to test human skills and provide fun and entertainment for people across a broad age range. They are not intended to be a test of computer skills or latest ai technologies so DON’T use ai or computed generated answers to enter any of the competitions. Entries or answers which appear to be AI or computer generated will be subject to verification and may be disqualified.
  2. The Closing Date for all competitions is 1st January 2028 after which all results will be announced, or if correct entries have not been received, the date may be extended. Please DON’T ask us for solutions or information relating to the treasure hunts before this date, although we may make further announcements on our website, and may announce the finding of keepers brooches following the successful delivery of a chapter prize to the winner.
  3. DO please check our website for updates and further information which may also include upgrades on some of the prizes.
  4. DO have a great deal of fun with all aspects of the Treasure Hunts and the Book and try to find how many different elements the book contains, which will help you in your search.

For the Quest for the Ladies Brooches

  1. If you are going to look for the hidden tokens DO make sure you prepare well. Make sure you have arranged somewhere to stay if you are visiting Eden and make sure you check for all the local conditions as some of the more remote parts of Eden can be closed or difficult during the wetter and colder months.
  2. DO always make sure you have appropriate shoes and clothing, as well as water and communications. Sometimes mobile phone signals can be patchy in the hills of Eden so best to ensure that you have a travelling companion.
  3. DO use proper guides and maps and stick to public footpaths. Ordnance survey maps are recommended – we recommend the physical maps but if you find those too old fashioned you can now access them on the Ordnance Surveys app or website.
  4. DO follow and comply with the Countryside Code – you can use your search as a good opportunity to learn or remind yourself about the Countryside Code and even to teach any of your companions who are not familiar with it.
  5. DON’T damage, litter or cause any mess anywhere you may go.
  6. Remember you are not looking for the gold brooches or anything which would react to a metal detector so DON’T use a metal detector in your search. You will know when you have found one of the tokens because it is marked with the Towers of Eden logo and the Chapter number to which it relates.
  7. If you are lucky enough to find a token in your search DON’T announce your find as this may disqualify you. DO register your find with the Huntmaster at the Towers of Eden website (huntmaster@towersofeden.com) and confirm to him where and how you found the token, and the answer to the riddles in the relevant chapter. You will have to satisfy the Huntmaster that you have solved all the relevant chapter riddles and found the token using the clues in the book and without using any ai or computer-generated help. You will then have to turn up at the right place at the right time in order to exchange your token for the Ladies brooch and Casket.
  8. Different caskets may be used for each chapter prize. This is because, whilst each of the Brooches are the same, the caskets are all original antiques specially acquired and refurbished for the Towers of Eden, so each is unique even if patterns are similar.

For The Hoard of Eden

  1. DO answer all of the questions on the form clearly, as you must get all of the questions right to win the Prize. We advise you to keep a copy of any form you submit for your own records and for verification if you win.
  2. DO make sure you include your name and a contact address at the beginning of the the form (where it says “I”, put your name (one per entry form), and where it says “of” insert your contact address. You can put your email in the place indicated on the form and also a contact phone number if you are happy for us to contact you by phone.
  3. If you complete an entry form but subsequently change your mind about the answers DO submit another form. You can submit as many entry forms as you like, subject to them all being on official forms, so that if you feel your first entry was incorrect you can try again. The Huntmaster will accept the first correct answer.
  4. DO remember to answer the tie breaker as we may use it to select a winner if there are no correct entries by the Closing Date.

For the Faces of the Past

  1. DO make sure that all of the entries you send in are A2 or A3 size and that each of the faces you are claiming to identify are clearly marked.
  2. DO make sure that your name and contact details, including your email address, are clearly marked on your entry. It's no good being a winner if we cannot contact you or don’t know who you are!
  3. DO keep a copy of your entry and send a physical copy to the address provided, with a digital copy to the Huntmaster by email to facesofthepast@towersofeden.com.
  4. DO make sure that every face or skull you identify is recognisable and contains facial features. We have the complete discretion whether to allow or disallow claims which we think are dubious and may refer these to a panel of experts for advice.
  5. DO answer the tie breaker question in case there are multiple entries with the same number of faces identified.

A. The Hoard of Eden

The Hoard of Eden in its 18th Century carved oak Presentation Case

The Hoard of Eden consists of the following:

1. The Bronze Age Collection

Made and worn during the Bronze Age between approximately 3300 to 750 B.C. this collection of jewellery enables the winner to touch and wear artefacts which predate the coming of the Romans and link to the time when the Spectral Ladies of the story would have been gathering and probably associated with the moon goddess, the predominant female deity in those early times. The Bronze Age Collection is made to be treasured, used and admired.

2. The Viking Collection

A collection of Viking Jewellery dating back to the Viking period 800-1100 AD or earlier. Reminding us of the early medieval period which has left so many echoes into our times.

3. The Medieval Collection

Small Medieval Brooches from the Hoard – 1300-1400 A D

The first in openwork with thick borders and a round sectioned pin from an old UK collection, the second is smaller with a rectangular frame pierced at one corner for the pin, the upper face decorated with bands with small pellets in counter relief, found in Breckland Norfolk UK. Both recently regilded.

4. Ancient Coins

Two separate pouches of ancient silver coins are included in The Hoard of Eden. The first contains largely medieval silver coins from a number of sources and including pennies, groats and other denominations, and the second consists of silver coins from the Tudor or Stuart period, also consisting of groats, pennies and other denominations. Many of the coins are clipped or very worn, showing their long use (clipping was the illegal practice of cutting silver from the edges of coins), but enough details can still be seen to identify most of them.

It is these coins which give the Hoard its formal classification of Treasure under the Treasure Act of 1996, which defines “treasure” as any object or group of objects which meet specific criteria, including being at least 300 years old and containing at least 10% precious metal, or being an object of exceptional historical significance that is at least 200 years old. These coins are now collectors’ items and the predecessors of the modern coins which make up the “cash” element of the Hoard of Eden.

The ancient coins also include one which was rolled up for use as a whistle or lace end.

5. Hand Made Cash Bags containing at least £5,000 in current Cash.

The Hoard of Eden includes £5,000 in cash which is contained in specially made cash pouches.

Each of the Cash Pouches in the Hoard of Eden hold up to £1,000 in modern £1 and £2 coins minted either in the reign of Queen Elizabeth or King Charles and amounting to legal tender (i.e. they can be paid into your bank account).

For every 1,000 books sold the amount of cash in the Hoard will be increased by £1,000.

B. The Quest for Ladies’ Brooches

Brooches and Caskets.

Specially made for The Towers of Eden are the beautiful gold and jewelled Ladies’ brooches around which are inscribed invocations from the book. The brooches are based on a lovely medieval penannular brooch displayed at the British Museum. This form was quite commonly used in medieval times as a powerful token or love or faith and carried inscriptions intended to protect or inspire the recipient. It is hoped that each of the new owners of these brooches will be inspired and delighted by their award (for which they will no doubt have worked hard!)

Each brooch will be presented in a genuine antique (19th Century) brass casket modelled on a medieval original and refurbished by Merliz (see team credits) especially for The Towers of Eden. Inside each casket will be a certificate of authenticity.

C. Faces of the Past

The Faces of the Past Contest involves seeking the faces hidden in the illustrations in the Book. The sharp eyed and perceptive winner in each Chapter will be awarded a trophy consisting of a gilded skull mounted on a pillar, each of which bears a gilded Lady’s Brooch with the number of the Chapter to which the Prize relates.

Skulls were carefully covered in 24 carat gold leaf and then varnished and burnished by hand by Anne Marie Bicketron, artist and photographer (see team credits). Hidden inside each skull is a remote-control LED light which enables the trophy to be illuminated or serve a practical function. Each Trophy is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

A separate and larger prize will be awarded to the one who identifies the most hidden faces throughout the book (including covers). This trophy is still under construction at the time of publication so look for further photographs in the update section of the website.
